From pile of rust to working pirn winder

The pirn winder is an important piece of kit for the Hattersley Loom weaver.  Correctly set up it will provide a consistent pirn for the shuttle, perfectly wound.

Our winder was a motorless pile of rust, a month later a very handy working machine!

Low Cloud on Harter Fell

On Sunday 19th January 2020, with a very good weather forecast, we set off to Haweswater after the usual Morrison's breakfast.  The road in was populated by a long stream of parked cars, and we ended up some way back from the small car park at Mardale Head.   Lots of blue sky, but the sun had not reached this side of the valley, and the road was perilously icy.  Cars didn't have a problem with this, but just walking to the gate at the start of the walk was a nervy affair.  At 11:45am we began with a steady climb...

Kilnsey Moor and Mastiles Lane.

Sunday 24th November 2019 A very murky day, but with no rain forecast we decided to head into the Dales to explore Kilnsey Moor, a large expanse of wild empty hills.  We have walked many times from Conistone Bridge, but always up or down Wharfedale, this time we turned west, aiming for a distant track which can be seen disappearing over the moor.  This is Mastiles Lane which eventually reaches Malham Tarn.   There are always horses around this area and some were being trained at Bow Bridge as we climbed steadily on the muddy track.  Were we out of practice...
